At UKA, the kaiseki small plates tradition comes to life not only via the considered, interlocal menu but through the experience itself, conveying a delicate and memorable approach to quality, inspiration, and flavor, and engaging all of the senses along the way. It’s an homage to the beauty of Japanese culinary culture and its many facets and a voyage through its timeless customs. The name "UKA" was inspired by "Ukanomitama-no-Kami," the god of grain and fertility, who has been worshipped in Japan since ancient times. Split between multiple levels of the Hollywood & Highland complex, Japan House's L.A. Swing by to find a gallery, which features rotating art exhibits focused on architecture, manga, photography and beyond. It also houses a free-to-the-public reading room, as well as an events space.

This space will host receptions, film screenings, performances, workshops, lectures, discussions and instructional demonstrations, during which visitors will experience Japan's diverse artistic and intellectual offerings. His worldwide projects include a song dedicated to the tenth anniversary of the Emperor of Japan’s reign, the official theme song for the World Expo, Hollywood film soundtracks, and the official theme song for the prestigious Golden Globe Awards. Led by YOSHIKI, X Japan has sold over 30 million albums and singles and sold out the 55,000-seat Tokyo Dome a record-breaking 18 times. He was the first Asian musician to perform at the world’s greatest music halls including Madison Square Garden, Wembley Arena, and solo performances at Carnegie Hall.

JAPAN HOUSE is an innovative, worldwide project with three hubs – London, Los Angeles and São Paulo – conceived by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. With the concept of “What Japan Can Bring to the World’s Music Scene,” the complimentary event will feature performances by world-renowned guitarist MIYAVI, along with rhythms by drummer YOYOKA as well as the Asano Taiko drumming group, and the soulful resonance of tsugaru shamisen by Mike Penny. A vibrant “Savor Japan” zone will offer a variety of Japanese street and festival foods, teas, desserts, and Japanese beer and sake for purchase. Walk-ins are welcome as space allows and the gallery is open daily from 11 a.m. According to Masuda, kawaii is “a personal microcosmos of beloved things, undisturbed by anyone else.” This exhibition invites the audience into an adventure of self-expression, unlocking the infinite potential held within each individual.

After a successful year of welcoming local and tourist diners since opening its doors, JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles announced the temporary closure of its acclaimed sushi tasting restaurant, INN ANN, to begin preparations for the next phase of its restaurant project. Highlights include Masuda’s “Kawaii Timeline” (created in collaboration with Kyoto University of the Arts) depicting kawaii culture’s historical roots from post-war media and shōjo manga (comic books for girls) to the 1990s where it evolved into a global phenomenon rooted in Tokyo’s Harajuku district. An immersive room installation, “Colorful Rebellion -Seventh Nightmare-” envelops guests in the colors and aesthetic of kawaii. Multiple pieces foster discovery and engagement, such as “Digital Tribe World Map” and “Sense Share Bear” (an interactive VR work) both inspired by the desire for the global kawaii network to connect with one another during the COVID-19 pandemic. With a built-in screen and projector, audio system, and complimentary WiFi, the Salon is a versatile space that can accommodate various layouts. The room also features a fully equipped demonstration kitchen that can be used for a culinary workshop or interactive chef’s station. Designed by award- winning interior designer, Ryu Kosaka, the Salon combines a tranquil modern space with multi-purpose functionality that can host a wide range of programs.

Kohei Nawa was born in Osaka, Japan in 1975 and now lives and works in Kyoto. He received his MFA, and PhD in Fine Arts from the Kyoto City University of Art. In addition to his work as an artist, Nawa is the founder and director of SANDWICH, a creative platform for contemporary art, design, and architecture projects. Nawa's "PixCell-Deer#24" is part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's permanent collection.

“It is my hope that by engaging with Japan’s pop culture and the philosophy of kawaii, visitors will be encouraged to reflect on what’s unique about themselves and contemplate how to navigate the social and personal challenges of the future. I would be delighted if exploring these diverse perspectives could become a hint for living into tomorrow,” said Masuda. Located at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles’ restaurant space, home to various restaurant pop-ups since its inception in 2018, UKA’s new permanent space features an intimate dining room and Chef’s counter accommodating up to 30 guests per seating. The 1,187 square foot space, designed by Ryu Kosaka, juxtaposes soft gray hues with warm, natural tones of wood in paneling, tables, and countertops, punctuated throughout by lantern-inspired lighting and bonsai tree and bamboo accents. Large windows allow for sweeping views from Hollywood to Downtown Los Angeles.

Japan House Los Angeles has partnered with multi-disciplinary artist and “King of Kawaii” Sebastian Masuda for its newest exhibition “Yes, KAWAII is Art -EXPRESS YOURSELF-,” opening May 2. The term kawaii literally translates to “cute” or “adorable,” but Japanese kawaii culture has evolved into a global phenomenon encompassing fashion, art, technology, and even social behavior. Hollywood’s Japan House has tapped artist Sebastian Masuda to dive into the roots of all things cute and colorful with this exhibition on Japanese kawaii culture. The Salon on Level 5 is home to a wide variety of original events such as artist workshops, gastronomy events, film screenings, lectures and panel discussions, family-friendly programs, and more. The space is also available for private events for corporations and community organizations. It’s a perfect setting for a memorable and exclusive experience with plenty of natural lighting and a balcony providing sweeping views of Hollywood and Downtown Los Angeles.
JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles is located on the second and fifth floors of the popular Ovation Hollywood, a shopping and entertainment complex home to the Dolby Theatre, the world-famous venue for the annual Academy Awards.
